1986 Hive in the Hallways

Green light sweeps on busted glass

Air goes thin where wires run black

Boots hit steel like a victory song

Then the tracker screams and the mission goes wrong

We signed our names on hardened steel

Swore nothing could make us kneel

Checked every room in a practiced line

Missed what was moving in the ceiling spine

Lights on rifles, jokes in our teeth

No one noticed the breathing beneath

One green dot where the map ran clean

Then ten more crawled across the screen

Check the ceiling

Check the floor

Count the ammo

Lock the door

Run when the tracker sings

Close every door from those crawling things

We were lions till the lights went low

Now every little beep means go, go, go

Eggs split open in reactor steam

Black shells move where the walls should be

Radio cracks with a swallowed name

Boots run through the emergency haze

Somebody wanted the monster alive

Kept clean hands while the squad count died

No ship to save the missing team

Left hall empty

Right hall clear

Death is closer

Than it appears
